About this course

Join us on this two-day course as we explore the cultural and ecological context of ‘weeds’ and ‘invasive’ plants and discover their beneficial properties.

The dominant narrative re plantae non gratae remains one of ‘othering’ and, often, war. This is increasingly being challenged and efforts are being made to positively reframe such plant beings. This might be due to a combined reflection of our collective evolution away from power over dynamics to power with. This in person short course, is intended to support people who are curious about and interested in having more convivial relationships with plantae non gratae.

Participants will be taken through a step process to this end, beginning with a trauma-informed, open space introduction, leading on to a revelatory enquiry into their cultural and ecological contexts, then a plant connection exercise, and culminating in – with reference to real world examples – pragmatic methods to express power with plantae non gratae.

The intention is for this course to be interactive within and around its presented elements, thus benefitting from offerings from the group.

on this course you will

  • Consider multi-species realities and biocentric ethics, as well as the role of collective and ancestral trauma in our relationships with plantae non gratae.
  • Learn the meanings of such plants; why do they arise where they do?
  • Explore the gains they may be bringing with reference to scientific, alternative and indigenous perspectives.
  • Discover ways to connect, even communicate, with such plants.
  • Consider ways to celebrate their ecological agency.
  • Learn, perhaps even co-create, pragmatic yet respectful ways to work with plantae non gratae where there is an accepted need to control or negate their agency.
  • Leave with resources to support you on your onward journey to meet plantae convivae.
