about this film
As an elderly farmer’s strength fades, who will inherit the land he loves?
David (Rory Kinnear – Skyfall) and Laura (Emily Beecham – Hail, Caesar!) are 40-something underachievers who grew up on the family farm run by their father (played by real-life farmer Roger Marten). As their Dad puts in his final years of work on the estate, they each – from a distance and via voicemail – present their bid to inherit the land. Filmed close to Pulborough, West Sussex, Nick Parish’s tremendously impressive feature debut features innovative audio-driven film storytelling, finding something unique in its tale of an intransigent English farmer who works quietly, stoically and all alone to maintain his ancestral land as in the background, his family unravels.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Nicholas Parish is a British artist and filmmaker who is based in London. After graduating from Art College Nick initially delved into sculpture and furniture design. His creative journey took an unexpected turn as he began documenting his work through film, igniting a passion for the moving image. This led him to explore narrative filmmaking, dedicating years to refining his craft in short films, music videos, and installations, all rooted in his artistic background. At its core, his work is an exploration of the human condition, delving deep into what it means to be human through the lens of his camera. Nick’s short films played at such festivals as BFI London FF, New York IFF, Cinequest FF and Los Angeles Short FF. “The Old Man and the Land” is his feature debut.
