Sir Peter Maxwell Davies died at his home in Orkney on 14 March, aged 81.
Max, as he was known, began his association with Dartington in 1957 when he was in Stravinsky’s composition class at the Dartington International Summer School, (along with Harrison Birtwistle, Alexander Goehr, Hugh Wood, Richard Rodney Bennett and Cornelius Cardew).
Throughout the 1970s he taught at the Summer School with his ensemble The Fires of London, and went on to become Artistic Director of the Summer School from 1979 to 1984. In 2008 he returned to teach the Advanced Composition course.
