Barn Cinema: Special Events
We’re not just about ‘traditional’ film screenings – some of our events are a little bit different.
Q&As and introductions with industry professionals
This has been an exciting part of our programme for a number of years. We have been fortunate to have been visited by industry professionals such as the BAFTA-winning director Mark Jenkin (Bait, 2019), photojournalist Paul Conroy and cinematographer and filmmaker Nick Hammer, amongst many others.
Unusual events in unusual places
Our beautiful grounds here at Dartington have given us the opportunity to host some extraordinary film events. From our outdoor cinema season in our Private Gardens (featuring one-off screenings such at NT live’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Max Richter’s Sleep), to live scored silent film in our Great Hall, we strive to create some unforgettable film experiences and look forward to even more in the future.
Screenings for different needs
At the Barn we want to open the cinematic experience to as many people as possible. We are growing our programme to include relaxed screenings that are sensory friendly, captioned screenings of English language films and audio-described film as well as parent and baby screenings. We are always looking to learn more about how to tailor our screenings to different needs – please contact ali.donkin@dartington.org if you have any suggestions.
Film and Music
The Barn has the immense privilege of being at the heart of Dartington Trust, a venue with a long and rich history of supporting the arts and generating a thriving creative environment. Our Summer School and Festival, for example, continues that legacy in bringing talented musicians to Dartington every summer, and the Barn has collaborated on exciting festival events, such as silent films scored live by pianist Joanna MacGregor. We will continue this important link through our yearly program and look forward to some exciting events in the future. One plan in the works is to pair live music jam nights with archive film footage.
